(b) A human body cell contains 46 chromosomes. How many chromosomes are in a human sperm cell? [1]

(c) Explain why it is important that gametes contain half the number of chromosomes of body cells. [2]

(d) Give two differences between the cells produced by meiosis and the cells produced by mitosis. [2]

Some organisms reproduce sexually and some reproduce asexually.

(a) Complete the table. Put a tick (✓) in each row to show whether the statement is true for sexual reproduction or for asexual reproduction. [3]

StatementSexualAsexual
Only one parent is needed
Gametes fuse together
The offspring are clones of the parent

(b) Name the type of cell division that takes place in asexual reproduction. [1]

The diagram shows how the genetic material is arranged in a human cell. Each part is shown at a higher magnification than the part before it.

(a) Which letter, A, B, C or D, shows a gene? [1]

(b) Name structure B. [1]

(c) Write these three structures in order of size, starting with the smallest. [1]

A horse has 64 chromosomes in each of its body cells.

(a) How many chromosomes are there in a horse egg cell? [1]

(b) Sperm cells are made in the testes by meiosis. Each cell that divides by meiosis produces four sperm cells.

Calculate the number of sperm cells produced when $2.5 \times 10^{5}$ cells divide by meiosis.

Give your answer in standard form. [2]

(c) After fertilisation, the zygote divides by mitosis. In the first few days, every cell divides each time.

(i) How many cells are there after the zygote has divided 4 times? [1]

(ii) How many chromosomes are in each of these cells? [1]

(d) Explain why the foal that develops is not genetically identical to either of its parents. [2]

DNA is a polymer made of many repeating units.

(a) Name the repeating units that make up DNA. [1]

(b) The base sequence on one strand of a short section of DNA is:

T A C G G A T T C A A G

Give the base sequence on the complementary strand. [1]

(c) What is the maximum number of amino acids that this section of DNA can code for? [1]

(d) In a sample of DNA from a bacterium, 18% of the bases are thymine (T).

Calculate the percentage of bases that are guanine (G). [2]

(e) Proteins are made on ribosomes. Describe the role of carrier molecules in protein synthesis. [2]

Aphids are small insects that feed on plant sap.

In summer, female aphids reproduce asexually. They give birth to young without mating.

A student counted the aphids on one rose plant once a week during the summer. The graph shows the results.

(a) How many aphids were on the plant at week 4? [1]

(b) Calculate the mean rate of increase in the number of aphids between week 1 and week 4.

Give the unit. [2]

(c) Explain how asexual reproduction allows the number of aphids to increase so quickly in summer. [2]

(d) In autumn, aphids reproduce sexually. They lay eggs which survive the winter and hatch in spring.

Suggest why it is an advantage to the aphids to reproduce sexually at this time of year. [2]

The common frog reproduces sexually. Each body cell of a frog contains 26 chromosomes.

Explain how a frog egg cell and a frog sperm cell are produced, and how they lead to a tadpole that:

  • has 26 chromosomes in each of its body cells
  • is genetically different from both of its parents
  • contains many different types of cell.

Daffodils are plants that can reproduce in two ways:

  • by making seeds in their flowers
  • by making new bulbs that grow from the parent bulb under the ground.

The table shows information from a daffodil grower.

MethodNumber of new plants from one parent each yearTime from planting until the first flowers in years
Seeds405
New bulbs21

(a) Which type of reproduction produces new bulbs? [1]

(b) The grower plants 50 bulbs. Each year, every bulb produces 2 new bulbs. All of the bulbs survive.

Calculate the number of bulbs after 3 years. [2]

(c) The grower wants to sell daffodils that all have the same flower colour as the parent plants.

Use the information to explain why the grower should use bulbs rather than seeds. [2]

(d) Plant breeders who want to produce new varieties of daffodil grow them from seeds.

Explain why. [2]

Part of the base sequence of a gene that codes for an enzyme is:

AAA GAA TGG GGA

(a) Give the sequence of amino acids coded for by this part of the gene. [1]

(b) A mutation changes the fifth base in the sequence from A to T.

Which amino acid in the enzyme is changed, and what is it changed to? [1]

(c) Explain how the mutation in part (b) could stop the enzyme from working. [3]

(d) A different mutation changes the last base in the sequence from A to T.

Explain why this mutation has no effect on the enzyme. [1]

(e) Some mutations happen in non-coding parts of DNA. They do not change the sequence of amino acids in any protein, but they can still change the phenotype.

Suggest how. [1]
