(a) Write $2\log_{a}6-\log_{a}4$ as a single logarithm, simplifying your answer. [2]

(b) Solve $3^{x}=20$, giving your answer to 3 significant figures. [2]

In this question you must show all stages of your working. Solutions relying entirely on calculator technology are not acceptable.

Solve $$\log_{3}(x+4)-\log_{3}(x-2)=2.$$ [4]

Solve the equation $$3^{2x}-7\left(3^{x}\right)+10=0,$$ giving your answers to 3 significant figures. [5]

The number of bacteria, $P$, in a culture $t$ hours after it is first observed is modelled by $$P=Ae^{kt},$$ where $A$ and $k$ are constants. Initially there are 200 bacteria, and after 5 hours there are 350 bacteria.

(a) Find the value of $A$ and the value of $k$, giving $k$ to 3 significant figures. [3]

(b) Find the time taken, according to the model, for the number of bacteria to reach 1000. [2]

(c) Find the rate at which the number of bacteria is increasing when $t=10$. [2]

Two variables $x$ and $y$ are related by $y=ab^{x}$, where $a$ and $b$ are constants.

The graph of $\log_{10}y$ against $x$ is a straight line passing through the points $(0,\,1.2)$ and $(4,\,2.0)$, as shown.

Find the value of $a$ and the value of $b$, giving each answer to 3 significant figures. [5]

In this question you must show all stages of your working. Solutions relying entirely on calculator technology are not acceptable.

(a) Show that the solution of $3^{x+1}=5^{x}$ can be written as $$x=\frac{\ln3}{\ln5-\ln3}.$$ [3]

(b) Solve $$2\log_{3}x-\log_{3}(x-2)=2.$$ [4]

A cup of tea is left to cool. Its temperature, $T\,^\circ\text{C}$, $t$ minutes after it was made is modelled by $$T=20+70e^{-kt},$$ where $k$ is a positive constant. After 10 minutes the temperature is $55\,^\circ\text{C}$.

(a) Show that $k=\dfrac{\ln2}{10}$. [3]

(b) Find the rate at which the temperature is decreasing at the instant when $T=41$. Give your answer to 3 significant figures. [3]

(c) Explain why, according to the model, the temperature of the tea never falls below $20\,^\circ\text{C}$. [1]
